Cold War Kids: Mine Is Yours

Set to be released on January 24th, 2011 the latest album from Cold War Kids made it’s way surreptitiously to my desk a couple days ago. Those crazy kids and their internet…

Cold War Kids - Mine Is Yours cover

Anyhow, it’s true, Mine Is Yours is probably my favorite 2011 album thus far. How did this happen?! Last we saw Cold War Kids with their 2008 sophomore album Loyalty to Loyalty. I had been a big fan of their sound and their first album. The second album really threw me for a loop. It was nothing but meandering wailing and whining coupled with mediocre production. It was, in my opinion, not pleasing to hear. Not a single catchy melody. No clever hooks, no stand-out tracks. I listened to it three or four times and wrote it off. Or rather, didn’t write about it at all, I just forgot about it altogether.

Now, unexpectedly for me, they’re releasing a new album in a couple days! First and foremost, within the first 30 seconds of the first track you realize there has been a huge mix-up in production and direction. What’s that I hear? Electronic drum kicks? Echo-y “whoaha’s”? Poignant lyrics? Claps? Overlaid voices? A totally catchy melody? No shrieking or wailing nonsense? Wait a second, is this even the same band? I was honestly halfway through the second track before I was confident this wasn’t some prank. Suffice to say I’ve been listening to this nearly non-stop and can’t get enough.

My favorite track so far has been Finally Begin which members can listen to over on the right →
